Introduction to LAIA

The Lung and Asthma Information Agency is an academic unit in the Department of Community Health Sciences at St George's Hospital Medical School. Established in 1990, LAIA's sponsors are the Asthma UK , British Lung Foundation and the British Thoracic Society. There has been additional support over the years from commercial funders.

Overall management of LAIA is by a Steering Group. This comprises of representatives from: the Asthma UK, British Lung Foundation and the British Thoracic Society the Office for National Statistics (ONS) and the Department of Community Health Sciences at St. George's. LAIA is managed locally by a Project Board which includes various academic members of staff in the Department of Community Health Sciences.

The work of the Agency concentrates on three main areas:

  • the production of factsheets, charts and tables on the epidemiology of lung diseases
  • the maintenance of a comprehensive respiratory database
  • the provision of an ad-hoc information service to its sponsors: the Asthma UK, the British Lung Foundation and the British Thoracic Society.

Our factsheets, charts and figures can be downloaded. We are however unable to provide a general information service to the public. If you have specific queries on asthma or other lung diseases, please contact our sponsors who may be able to help you.

To be notified of new factsheets, join our email list.
