"The British Thoracic Society is a membership organisation for all who work in respiratory health care. Its charitable objectives are "the relief of sickness and the preservation and protection of public health by promoting the best standards of care for patients with respiratory and associated disorders; advancing knowledge about their causes, prevention and treatment; and promoting knowledge about the prevention of respiratory disorders". Members include doctors, nurses, physiotherapists, scientists, technical staff and others who are working to improve standards of care for people with lung diseases. Activities include publication of evidence-based treatment guidelines, education and training courses; a large annual research conference; audit; peer review and data collection about services and workforce. We try at all times to work in strategic and genuine partnership with others who share the same goals, in primary and secondary care, and with patients."
The Society publishes guidelines on asthma and many other respiratory
conditions and issues.
